History of the Castellón Bullring

The Plaza de Toros in Castellón was inaugurated on 3 July 1887 and has since been a venue for unforgettable moments in bullfighting history. The story of this current plaza began in 1878, when the previous structure—made of wood and brick—was deemed unsafe and dismantled. This led to the formation of a shareholder society led by Hipólito Fabra Adelantado, among others, who commissioned architect and former mayor Manuel Montesinos Arlandis to design a new bullring. Completed in 1887, it opened with a memorable bullfight featuring the legendary matadors “Lagartijo” and “Frascuelo,” who faced bulls from the Duke of Veragua’s famed herd.

Architecturally, the arena features a 49-metre diameter ring surrounded by stone stands, exuding a robust and functional design. On its façade, a bronze medallion sculpted by renowned Castellón artist José Viciano Martí showcases the head of a bull. This piece, created in Viciano Martí’s signature realistic style, captures the noble intensity and strength of the bull, serving as a lasting tribute to this symbol of Spanish culture.

In 2004, renovations reduced its seating capacity by 1,200 to enhance comfort and visibility. Historically, the plaza also witnessed significant events beyond bullfighting; in 1938, it was used as a concentration camp for Republican prisoners during the Spanish Civil War, bearing witness to the country’s turbulent past.

Improvements and Renovations

The Plaza de Toros in Castellón has undergone several enhancements focused on accessibility, comfort, and safety. To improve accessibility, wider gates have been installed in the sunny area, facilitating quicker and safer evacuation for spectators. To boost comfort, the interior corridor from the main entrance to the seating area has been renovated, with upgrades to the ceilings, walls, and vomitories.

Additionally, restroom facilities have been optimised, particularly in the shaded area, to provide greater comfort for female attendees. In terms of safety, the plaza now features improved drainage systems and new LED lighting, ensuring visibility and security throughout all entrances and corridors. The second phase of improvements will involve renovating the remaining corridors to make the Castellón Bullring an increasingly comfortable and appealing space for visitors.

The main difference between a bullfight and a bullfight with steers lies in the age and size of the animals. In a bullfight, the bulls are adults, usually between 4 and 6 years old, and are larger and stronger. In contrast, in a bullfight with steers, the steers are young bulls, less than 4 years old, and are therefore smaller in size and less experienced. Steer bullfights are often a platform for novice bullfighters and a way to prepare young bulls for future bullfights.

In case of rain, the bullfight may be suspended or delayed. The decision depends on the intensity of the rain and the conditions of the bullring. If the rain is light and ceases, the event may continue with a delay, but if it is heavy or persists, the show may be cancelled. In case of cancellation, tickets are usually refunded or rescheduled for a new date, although this may vary depending on the policies of the venue and the organisers.
